Chapter 3
On Achieving Prestige
The world has come to fear the name Madrigal. Kings quake before us and even the bravest soldiers feel the cold quiver of fear when we approach. But rule by fear is not enough. We can force a man to his knees, but we must also have the power to bend him to our will. To be truly great, we must have both absolute Power and absolute Prestige.
The rules for achieving Prestige have been handed down since the beginning. Ignore them at your peril.
1. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer -- To rule with authority, you must identify those who threaten you. Lose sight of your enemies and you become blind to their attacks.
2. Displaying your power means showing its limits -- To maintain your Power and Prestige, do not put them on display. Your enemies will fear your strength even more if they do not know it's limits.
3. Greed is never satisfied -- If your search for Prestige is based in greed, you will never succeed, for greed is never satisfied. You know the ultimate aim of all Madrigals. Keep this goal in mind and never allow your head to be turned from it.
4. Power is not given up, it is taken away -- Power will never be given to you. Instead, you must take it. Likewise, most will never give up power. But you must be fluid -- you must sacrifice all for the ultimate...
