Stolen Archive file 61: A journal of Lord Byron

(old, weathered book)

22 March 1817
The Countess Guiccioli and I arrived in Venice yesterday for the meeting of the Cahill branches and Carnival. I thank heavens this meeting happens only once a year, and in such a jovial setting. It would be too horrid otherwise. Carnival changes the city. Masked and merry ghosts walk the streets. We can keep our secrets hidden here. The wind blows our confessions out to sea.

We came across a few of my kin this afternoon at the tailor's. The Countess wanted a satin bow to match the silk-and-taffeta dress she purchased in Genoa. I dare-say she and I found my relations quite frightful. A pair of my cousins wore matching satin outfits in pea-green! I have no patience for my cousins from the other branches, let alone those who wear ugly clothes. It hurts my spleen. The Tomas are the worst. They must dress in the dark.

Tomorrow I will spend unhappily among them. Pray, the meeting be short.
