[edit] Card 58

[edit] Summary

The Tomas are the world's most fearless explorers - the first ones up Everest, the first to sail around Australia, the first to step foot on the moon. The reason they're so comfortable being in uncharted places is that they have a big appetite for adventure and a natural sense of direction. Just give them the sky above and a compass in hand, and most Tomas can find their way home.

After dark, you can look to the stars for guidance. Locate the North Star - it always points north. Duh! Here's how to find it in the night sky:

1. Locate the Big Dipper - it's shaped like a ladle. Be sure to use the Big Dipper, not the puny Little Dipper - also a ladle-shaped. You'll be able to tell them apart because the Big Dipper is Bigger.

2. Locate the two stars on the outer edge of the Big Dipper. They form a line that points to the North Star. They are called "pointer stars."

3. The North Star is the really bright start that the pointer stars are pointing to. Duh!

Now that you've found north, hopefully you can figure out the other directions. You are a Tomas, after all.

It's easy to get disoriented while on the hunt for Clues. To stay one step ahead of the competition, you must always know where north is. A compass is an essential tool for all!

1. Magnetize the needle by rubbing it on a magnet or cell phone screen.

2. Thread the needle through the leaf. Once in, once out.

3. Put the leaf in the water.

4. Wait a few minutes.

5. The needle will align itself with the North Pole and you're on your way.

TIP: If you forget your compass, remember your sewing kit.
