-- THE CODE OF THE MADRIGALS --
Chapter 10
On Replicating the Others

Madrigals must have the ability to impersonate the Others -- to Replicate. The simplest way to fool the Others is to act like them and blend in. But in the most dangerous circumstances, revealing your knowledge of their secrets may save you. Consult the guidelines below. Failure to follow them may result in detection -- or death.

The Janus -- To impersonate a Janus, you must be well versed in the arts and culture. The Janus also respond to acts of reckless bravery and tend to dress theatrically or in uniform. But if the Janus you are trying to fool becomes suspicious, say you are an admirer of Fidelio Racco. It may be all you need.

The Ekaterina -- The Ekats are logical to a fault. You may be able to divert suspicious questions by responding to them with cool logic or by starting a scientific debate. However, when in trouble, you can always reveal your knowledge of Ekaterina history. The Ekats have no knowledge of how many of their secrets we have discovered. Mention the name Galileo, and you are sure to be accepted.

The Tomas -- To blend in with the Tomas, you may be tempted to challenge one to arm wrestle. Do not. Even the Tomas that are not physically powerful have huge determination. They will never back down from a physical challenge, and they never quit. Instead, mention the real reason George Washington lost his teeth and had to wear ivory ones.

The Lucian -- Lucians are deeply mistrustful, so prepare well. To impersonate a Lucian, you must have a wide knowledge of spycraft, games of strategy, and the art of poisoning. But if you meet a Lucian face to face and hope to pass as a member of that branch, you best chance is to act mistrustful yourself. Ask the person you meet to prove that he or she is a Lucian. Question their motives and their honesty. If all else fails and you are in peril, there is one name that may keep you safe: Luke.

For a discussion of advanced impersonation techniques, see Chapter 11.
